Highgate Heats up – a summer of fun and creativity

This summer, we started our ‘Home in Highgate’ journey with local young people exploring and celebrating the vibrant community of Highgate. Through a series of activities and opportunities, young people had the opportunity to show us their neighborhood, share their stories and interview local people.  The Summer programme led to a summer fete at New Hope Community Park 31st August 2024.

Our workshops took place in various green spaces across the area, including St. Martin’s Youth and Community Centre, St. Alban’s Church, Stanhope Wellbeing Hub Gardens, Appletopia Park (renamed by Young people participating), and New Hope Park. Young participants delved into the natural world, building dens, creating their own local map, and interviewing local residents. By sharing their experiences and perspectives, they uncovered the unique character of Highgate. They expressed their thoughts, feelings, and aspirations, taking ownership of their own neighbourhood.

The project is with ‘Home in Highgate’ partners Birmingham Open Space Forum, St.Martin’s Youth and Community Centre, St.Alban’s Church, Glue Collective, Aero-kick Highgate, City of Nature, Highgate Community Support, The Active Wellbeing Society, Legacy West Midlands, Patchwork Meadow, Birmingham City Council.
